BSL support tools social workers can check and signpost
A bounded guide to official BSL services, dictionaries, communication advice and interpreter registers—and what each resource cannot do.

A useful link is not the same as a completed assessment or an accessible service. These tools can help a practitioner prepare, signpost and remove communication barriers, but the person’s stated needs and the current official service information remain the source of truth.
Learning and preparation
- UCL BSL SignBank is a research-based dictionary with Deaf signers, fingerspelling and information about regional variation. It supports learning; it is not an interpreter.
- RNID publishes Deaf-awareness and communication guidance. Use it to improve meetings, then still ask the individual what works for them.
- SignHealth provides BSL health information and resources about the Accessible Information Standard. It supports signposting; it does not replace clinical advice.
Urgent and emergency links
999 BSL and the NHS 111 BSL service publish official information for Deaf BSL users. Because availability, coverage, registration and device requirements can change, open the official page and check the current instructions before adding a link to a plan or signposting someone. Follow your normal emergency, safeguarding and health escalation procedures.
Finding communication professionals
For formal or high-impact conversations, use the person’s stated preference and your organisation’s booking process. Check professional registration where required. A dictionary, colleague with basic signing, relative or automated translation tool is not a substitute for an appropriately qualified professional in a complex assessment, safeguarding interview or legal process.
